Australians pay A$380/night at Alpine Hotel and think it's expensive. It is—but only by Australian standards. Compared to Europe or North America, A$380/night (~US$250) for a full-service 4★ hotel in the village centre is actually reasonable. The mistake: staying in Cooma or Jindabyne to 'save money.' You save A$270/night, then spend 2 hours daily driving (4 hours round-trip over a week = 14 hours), burn A$30/day fuel (A$210/week), and arrive exhausted. The math: A$1,890 saved - A$210 fuel = A$1,680 net savings. Your time cost: 14 hours. That's A$120/hour. If you're a student or broke, fine. If you're employed, your time is worth more. At A$650/night, this is Australia's best ski hotel—but that's damning with faint praise. It's lovely, but A$650 = mid-tier hotel in Courchevel. You're paying Australia tax for the nicest option in a limited market.

Thredbo village vs Perisher lodges

Thredbo has a proper alpine village with 20+ restaurants, bars, shops, and walkable lodging. Perisher is concrete ski lodges and limited dining. Most people prefer Thredbo's atmosphere, even though Perisher has more terrain. You can ski Perisher from Thredbo (25min drive).

Australian school holidays (late June, early July, late Sept) see Thredbo accommodation double. A$380/night becomes A$650. If you can ski mid-July through August (outside holidays), you'll save 40–50% and ski smaller crowds. Snow quality is identical.
