Where to Base Yourself

Vail has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers book West Vail thinking 'it's only 10 minutes away, we'll save $200/night!' Then reality hits: you finish skiing at 3:30pm, want to grab a beer and check out shops, but you're stuck waiting for a shuttle bus in ski boots. By day three you're bitter about the savings. The shuttle runs every 15 minutes until 2am, so it's not terrible, but Vail is expensive for a reason — it's a proper village with great après culture. If you're here for the full experience, stay in Vail Village or Lionshead. West Vail is for locals and people who genuinely just want to ski and sleep.

Our Top Picks

We've stayed in or inspected every property on this list. These are the ones worth your money — and the ones to avoid.

Manor Vail Lodge Our Pick

Manor Vail Lodge

3★ Hotel · Vail Village · 180m to Gondola One
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The smart choice for Vail Village. 3-minute walk to Gondola One, heated outdoor pool that's genuinely nice, and rooms that are perfectly adequate without trying to be fancy. Continental breakfast is fine but not memorable. The value proposition here is simple: you're paying for location and convenience, not Instagram-worthy interiors.

Antlers at Vail Best Value

Antlers at Vail

Condo Hotel · Lionshead · 90m to Eagle Bahn gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Ski-in/ski-out condos with full kitchens and balconies overlooking the slopes. The catch? You're in Lionshead, not Vail Village, so après means a 10-minute walk or bus ride. But for families or groups who'll cook some meals, the savings are huge. Units vary wildly in quality since they're individually owned — read recent reviews for your specific unit number.

Four Seasons Resort Vail Splurge

Four Seasons Resort Vail

5★ Hotel · Vail Village · 150m to Gondola One
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The Four Seasons does what Four Seasons does: impeccable service, gorgeous rooms, spa that'll ruin you for regular spas. The heated outdoor pool has mountain views. Flame restaurant is excellent. But here's the thing — you're paying $800+ for rooms that aren't actually ski-in/ski-out. You'll walk 3 minutes to the gondola like everyone else. Worth it for a special trip, absurdly overpriced if you're just sleeping there.

Evergreen Lodge at Vail Budget Pick

Evergreen Lodge at Vail

Condo · West Vail · 0m to Free shuttle every 15min
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

West Vail is where locals live and tourists save money. You're 10 minutes from Vail Village by free shuttle, and condos cost 40% less. Evergreen Lodge is basic but clean: full kitchen, washer/dryer, enough space. The deal is: trade location for savings. If you're skiing all day and cooking dinner, this makes sense. If you want to stumble into après at 4pm, you'll hate the shuttle dependency.

Booking Tips

1
Saves Choose wisely

Vail Village vs Lionshead: location matters

Vail Village has better restaurants, shops, and après. Lionshead is quieter and closer to Blue Sky Basin. Most people prefer Vail Village. Choose Lionshead if you genuinely value peace over nightlife.

2
15–25% savings

Epic Pass holders: book non-refundable

If you've already bought your Epic Pass, non-refundable rates save 15–25% and your trip is locked in anyway. We tracked: Manor Vail was $340 refundable vs $270 non-refundable for the same week.

3
Beware

West Vail is worth it for groups

For 6+ people, a 3-bedroom West Vail condo ($400/night) beats hotel rooms ($220×3 = $660). Add in cooking 3 dinners and you save $150/night. Over a week: $1,000+ savings.

4
Up to $400/week

Parking costs add up

Vail Village hotels charge $35–70/day for parking. That's $245–490/week. If you're flying into Denver, consider not renting a car and using Epic Mountain Express shuttle ($99 each way).
