Where to Base Yourself

Aspen Snowmass has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

Everyone wants to stay in downtown Aspen because it's iconic and beautiful and you can Instagram your breakfast with Ajax in the background. Here's what actually happens: you spend $600/night for a hotel that's a 5-minute walk to the gondola (not ski-in/ski-out), then you ski Snowmass most days anyway because it's the best mountain, so you're shuttling back and forth. Meanwhile, Snowmass base village is genuinely ski-in/ski-out, has great hotels at $400/night, and you wake up at the best skiing. Yes, Snowmass village is sterile and purpose-built. But you're here to ski, not hang out in your hotel lobby. Unless you're truly coming for Aspen's restaurant/nightlife scene (which is world-class, to be fair), save the money and hassle — stay in Snowmass.

Our Top Picks

We've stayed in or inspected every property on this list. These are the ones worth your money — and the ones to avoid.

Limelight Hotel Aspen Our Pick

Limelight Hotel Aspen

3★ Hotel · Downtown Aspen · 120m to Silver Queen Gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The best value in downtown Aspen, which is saying something in this town. Modern rooms, free cookies at 3pm (genuinely good), heated rooftop pool, and you're 2 blocks from the gondola. Free ski shuttle every 15 minutes. The trick: Limelight doesn't try to be fancy, so you're not paying for marble bathrooms you don't need. It's the sensible choice in a town full of $800/night ego.

Viceroy Snowmass Best Value

Viceroy Snowmass

4★ Hotel · Snowmass Base Village · 60m to Elk Camp Gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

True ski-in/ski-out at Snowmass base village, which is where 80% of people should stay instead of paying Aspen prices. Viceroy is sleek and modern, great spa, excellent restaurant (8K). The rooftop pool is heated year-round. Here's the reality: Snowmass village is purpose-built and lacks Aspen's charm, but you save $200/night and ski better terrain. Free shuttle to Aspen takes 20 minutes if you want nightlife.

The Little Nell Splurge

The Little Nell

5★ Hotel · Downtown Aspen · 0m to Silver Queen Gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The only 5-star ski-in/ski-out hotel in Aspen, at the base of Ajax. Element 47 restaurant has a Wine Spectator Grand Award. Service is flawless. Rooms are gorgeous. And yes, you're paying $1,000+/night in peak season for the privilege. Worth it? If you have to ask, probably not. But if this is a bucket-list trip, Little Nell delivers the full Aspen fantasy without apology.

Stonebridge Inn Condos Budget Pick

Stonebridge Inn Condos

Condo · Snowmass Base Village · 200m to Elk Camp Gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Basic ski-in/ski-out condos at Snowmass for people who care about skiing, not luxury. Full kitchens, 5-minute walk to gondola, heated pool. Units are dated (think 1990s rental furniture) but functional. The value is clear: half the price of Viceroy, same mountain access. Perfect for families or groups splitting costs. Just manage expectations — this is budget Snowmass, not Aspen chic.

Booking Tips

1
Saves Choose wisely

Aspen vs Snowmass: where to stay?

Aspen has charm, restaurants, and nightlife. Snowmass has better skiing and ski-in/ski-out. Most people overvalue Aspen's vibe and undervalue Snowmass' convenience. If you ski hard and party less, Snowmass wins.

2
30% cheaper

Book January, skip February

Aspen in February half-term is obscenely expensive and crowded with families. First two weeks of January have excellent snow, 30% lower prices, and you'll share the slopes with locals instead of trust funds.

3
Beware

Free shuttle is your friend

All four mountains (Ajax, Snowmass, Highlands, Buttermilk) are connected by free shuttle. You don't need a rental car in Aspen unless you're driving from Denver. Save $50/day parking and $300/week rental.

4
$3,000+ groups

Snowmass condos beat Aspen hotels for groups

For 6 people, a 3-bed Snowmass condo ($450/night) vs Aspen hotel rooms ($280×3 = $840/night) saves $2,730 per week. Add cooking 4 dinners ($120/meal × 4 = $480) and you save over $3,000.
