Where to Base Yourself

Laax has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

Expecting traditional Swiss Alpine charm in Laax. The resort is modern and purpose-built — think Scandinavian design, concrete and glass, functional. Laax village has some traditional character, but most people stay at Laax Base which is a contemporary resort hub. If you want chalets with flower boxes and church bells, go to Grindelwald or Klosters. Laax is for people who value terrain parks, modern design, and ski performance over quaint villages.

rocksresort

4★ Hotel · Laax Murschetg · 0m to Crap Sogn Gion cable car
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The flagship hotel in Laax and the best all-rounder. True ski-in/ski-out at the base of Crap Sogn Gion cable car, gorgeous modern design (concrete, wood, stone done beautifully), excellent spa with outdoor infinity pool. You're in the heart of 'Laax Base' — the purpose-built resort hub with restaurants/bars. The downsides: it's a *big* hotel (150 rooms), so it can feel corporate at busy times. And rooms are expensive for the size (25m² standard). But the ski access and facilities are superb.

Riders Palace Snowboard Vibe

Riders Palace

Hostel/Hotel · Laax Murschetg · 100m to Crap Sogn Gion cable car
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The legendary snowboard hostel in Laax. Dorm beds from £26/night, private rooms from £80. You're 2 mins' walk from the cable car, surrounded by freestyle/freeride culture. The hostel has a nightclub in the basement (literally), half-pipe on the doorstep, and the vibe is 100% park rat. The rooms are basic (hostel-level), it's loud (bass until 2am), and the crowd skews young (18-28). If you're into freestyle and want to party, it's perfect. If you're 45 and want peace, run away.

3★ Hotel · Laax Dorf · 300m to Laax gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Family-run hotel in Laax village (the traditional old village, not the resort base). You're 5 mins' walk from the Laax gondola. The hotel is simple but charming — traditional Swiss décor, small spa, good restaurant doing local food. It's quiet and peaceful, away from the Laax Base party scene. The downsides: it's dated (1980s wood paneling), WiFi is slow, and you're separated from the main resort hub (need to walk 10 mins or take a bus). But for half the price of rocksresort, it's solid.

Peaks Place Premium Choice

Peaks Place

4★ Hotel · Laax Murschetg · 50m to Crap Sogn Gion cable car
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The luxury option in Laax. Ski-in/ski-out, modern design with huge windows and mountain views, excellent spa, spacious apartments (most units are 2-3 bedrooms). The hotel is quieter and more upscale than rocksresort. The catch: at CHF 450+/night, you're paying premium prices in a resort that's known for freestyle/snowboarding, not luxury. And you're still in Laax Base (the purpose-built hub) — it's modern and functional, not charming. You get quality, but not Alpine character.

Booking Tips

1
Saves 20-30% in villages vs Base

Laax Base vs Laax/Falera villages

Laax Base (Murschetg) is the purpose-built resort hub — modern, ski-in/ski-out, all amenities. Laax and Falera villages are traditional, quieter, and 10 mins away by bus. Base is convenient, villages are cheaper and have more character. Pick based on priorities.

2
Manage expectations

Laax is a freestyle/freeride resort — embrace it

This isn't a luxury destination or traditional Swiss charm. It's about terrain parks, powder, and snowboard culture. If you want fancy hotels and Michelin stars, go to St. Moritz. If you want the best freestyle terrain in Europe, Laax is perfect.

3
Beware

Book apartments for groups

Laax has tons of self-catering apartments. For 4+ people, apartments are way better value than hotels (£30-40pp/night vs £100+). And you can cook/party without hotel restrictions.

4
£250/week self-catering

Half-board isn't common — self-cater or eat out

Most Laax accommodation is apartments or hotels without half-board. The resort has good restaurants (Riders Palace burger bar, etc) but eating out adds up. Self-cater to save money.
