Where to Base Yourself

Åre has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers book Åre because it's Sweden's best resort with great skiing, lively village, and beautiful Scandinavian design. They book a 3-star hotel in the village to experience it properly. Then they realize everything is expensive — hotel is £150/night (budget in Alps), dinners are £50/person, après beer is £9. They blew their budget by midweek. The mistake: not factoring in Swedish prices when budgeting total trip cost. That £150/night hotel is actually the cheap option; you'll spend another £350-400/person per week on food and drinks. Either book apartments and self-cater (saves £200-250/week), or budget £2000-2500 total for a week including accommodation, lift pass, and dining. Åre is fantastic but genuinely expensive. Don't book thinking 'similar to Alps' — it's 40-50% more costly for everything. Know what you're signing up for financially.

Hotel Granen Best Value

Hotel Granen

3★ Hotel · Åre Village · 250m to Kabinbana gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Good value 3-star hotel in central Åre. Simple but comfortable rooms, small spa with sauna, decent breakfast. Traditional Swedish mountain style — wood, simple design, functional. You're 5-min walk from the gondola and main square. Best value for skiers who want a central location without paying 4-star prices. Swedish hotels don't do half-board, so factor in restaurant costs.

SkiStar Lodge Björnen Budget Pick

SkiStar Lodge Björnen

Apartment · Åre Björnen · 50m to Björnen lift
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Good value apartments at the Björnen base area, lower down the mountain from Åre village. Modern, well-equipped, ski-in/ski-out to the Björnen slopes. You're 5 mins by free shuttle from Åre village but saving 30-40% on accommodation. The area is quieter, more family-oriented, less lively. Booking Tips

1
Saves Budget €350-500/week for dining

Sweden is expensive — budget accordingly

Åre has Scandinavian prices. Budget €20-30 for casual lunches, €40-60 for dinners, €7-9 for beer. Self-catering in apartments saves money but you'll miss Åre's excellent restaurant scene. Factor in high costs when booking.

2
30-40% cheaper in Björnen

Book Björnen for value, Åre for atmosphere

Björnen lower base has 30-40% cheaper accommodation but you're away from the village atmosphere. Åre village is lively with shops, bars, restaurants. If you want the full Åre experience, stay in the village. If skiing is priority, save money in Björnen.

3
Beware

No half-board in Swedish hotels

Swedish hotels do breakfast only. You'll eat in restaurants or self-cater. Unlike Austria where half-board saves money, in Sweden you're paying restaurant prices regardless. Factor this into total costs.

4
Availability + better prices

Book 6+ months ahead for peak weeks

Åre is hugely popular with Scandinavians. Christmas, New Year, and Swedish school holidays (weeks 7-9, mid-Feb) book out 6+ months ahead. Best hotels fill even earlier. Book September-October for peak season.
