Where to Base Yourself

Madonna di Campiglio has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

Choosing Madonna di Campiglio for the quantity of skiing. The resort is beautiful — pedestrian centre, stylish hotels, upscale Italian vibe. But the ski area is only 150km and mostly blue/red cruising. If you're a strong skier who wants big mileage and varied terrain, the Sella Ronda or Trois Vallées are better. Madonna is for people who want a *stylish* ski holiday with good (but limited) skiing. It's about aperitivo in the village square, not racking up 50km days.

Lefay Resort & Spa Ultimate Luxury

Lefay Resort & Spa

5★ Hotel · Pinzolo (12km) · 200m to Pinzolo gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

One of the most spectacular spa hotels in the Alps. The wellness area is 5,000m² — infinity pool overlooking the Dolomites, incredible design, world-class treatments. Rooms are stunning. The food is excellent (though not Michelin-starred). The massive catch: you're in Pinzolo, 12km from Madonna. It's a separate ski area (connected by ski bus/gondola, but it's a faff). If you're here primarily for the spa and wellness, it's incredible. If you're here to ski hard, you're in the wrong place.

Chalet del Sogno Our Pick

Chalet del Sogno

4★ Hotel · Madonna Centre · 90m to Fortini gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The best ski hotel in Madonna itself. You're 100m from Fortini gondola, excellent spa, half-board food is genuinely good (Italian hotel standards, not ski resort slop). Design is tasteful modern Alpine. The problems: it's popular so gets very busy — the spa at 5pm is a scrum, and breakfast can be chaotic. Some rooms face the road (Via Cima Tosa) which is noisy. And at these prices, rooms are on the small side (22m² standard). But for location and quality in Madonna, this is the one.

Hotel Spinale Best Value

Hotel Spinale

3★ Hotel · Madonna Centre · 150m to Fortini gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Solid mid-range hotel in the centre. Half-board included, 3-minute walk to Fortini gondola, small spa (sauna/steam room). Family-run for decades, staff are friendly. The negatives: it's dated (1980s wood-paneling aesthetic), WiFi is slow, and the spa is tiny (basically a sauna and jacuzzi). Rooms are clean but uninspiring. Half-board food is decent but repetitive (same rotation every week). But for Madonna on a budget, it's one of the better options.

Hotel Genzianella Budget Pick

Hotel Genzianella

2★ Hotel · Madonna Centre · 200m to Fortini gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The budget option in Madonna. Clean, central (4-minute walk to Fortini), breakfast included. It's a no-frills family-run hotel — think dated 1970s decor, tiny bathrooms, creaky floors. No spa, no elevator, WiFi is patchy. Rooms facing the street are noisy. But the hosts (Daniela and Marco) are lovely, and at £60-90/night in Madonna (where most hotels are £150+), it's a bargain. Don't expect comfort, just a clean bed and a good location.

Booking Tips

1
Saves Manage expectations on terrain

Madonna is stylish but the skiing is limited

The resort is gorgeous (pedestrian centre, upscale vibe), but the ski area is small (150km) and mostly intermediate. If you want big mileage, go to the Dolomites Sella Ronda. Madonna is more about the experience than hardcore skiing.

2
Save time, stay in Madonna

Don't stay in Pinzolo unless you prioritize spa over skiing

Pinzolo has Lefay (incredible spa resort) but it's a separate ski area 12km away from Madonna. Connecting is possible but eats 40+ mins daily. Only stay there if wellness is the priority.

3
Beware

Half-board makes sense here

Eating out in Madonna is expensive (€50+ pp for dinner) and the pedestrian centre means walking everywhere in ski boots. Take half-board at your hotel unless you hate fixed mealtimes.

4
Avoid paying 3x or having no availability

Book early for Christmas/New Year

Madonna is popular with wealthy Italians over the holidays. Hotels sell out months ahead and prices triple. If you want Christmas week, book by September or you'll have no options.
