Where to Base Yourself

Livigno has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers book Livigno because it's excellent value — good skiing, reliable snow, and surprisingly affordable. They book the cheapest apartment they can find at the far end of town (near Mottolino) to maximize savings. Mistake: they don't factor in Livigno's geography. The town is 7km long and narrow. Booking at one end means you're 15-20 mins from the other lift system, and Livigno isn't particularly charming — it's a functional resort town. They spend the week walking or waiting for buses, or they just ski one side of the valley. They should've paid 20% more for central location (between both gondolas) or checked which side they'll ski most. Central Livigno is still cheaper than most resorts, and you get flexibility to ski both areas plus easy access to shops and restaurants. The savings from the cheapest apartment get eaten by inconvenience and limited skiing variety.

Booking Tips

1
Saves €100-200/week

Duty-free status = serious savings

Livigno is a duty-free zone (EU exemption). Alcohol, cigarettes, fuel, and many goods are 20-30% cheaper than elsewhere in Italy. Self-catering groups can save €100-200/week on groceries and drinks. Stock up before leaving.

2
€50-70/person per week

Half-board is excellent value here

Livigno hotels offer generous Italian half-board (breakfast + 4-course dinner) for €25-35/day. Restaurant dinners cost €30-45. We calculated: half-board saves €50-70/person per week and the quality is reliably good.

3
Beware

Book Mottolino end for park skiing

Livigno has two ski areas. Carosello is better for cruising, Mottolino has the park and more challenging terrain. If you're park-focused, book near Mottolino gondola. Hotels there are 10-15% cheaper than central options.

4
30-40% cheaper, reliable snow

High altitude = reliable snow

Livigno is high (1816m town, up to 2900m skiing) and gets serious snowfall. It's one of the most snow-sure resorts in Italy. Book early season (December) or late season (April) for 30-40% lower prices with minimal snow risk.
