Where to Base Yourself

Courmayeur has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers book Courmayeur because it's beautiful, sophisticated, and at the foot of Mont Blanc. They're excited to experience Italian mountain elegance, so they book a nice 3-star hotel in town. Then they realize the skiing is limited — just 100km of pleasant but unexciting runs. They burn through that in 2-3 days and get bored. Meanwhile they're paying premium prices (Courmayeur is expensive) for limited skiing. The mistake: booking a full week in Courmayeur for the skiing alone. You should book Courmayeur for 3-4 days maximum, enjoy the town and restaurants, then move on or day-trip to La Thuile/La Rosière (160km) or Pila. Or flip it: base yourself in La Thuile (better skiing, 30% cheaper) and day-trip to Courmayeur for the atmosphere and dining. Don't spend a week in an expensive town with limited slopes unless you're equally here for the Italian experience as the skiing. The town is gorgeous; the skiing is fine. Budget accordingly.

Booking Tips

1
Saves Realistic expectations

Courmayeur town > Courmayeur skiing

Be honest: the skiing is limited (100km) and not exceptional. You're here for the sophisticated Italian town, excellent restaurants, and Mont Blanc views. Budget accordingly — this is about the experience, not just skiing. Consider day-trips to La Thuile (15 mins, 160km skiing).

2
Don't overpay for location

No ski-in/ski-out in town

Courmayeur is a real town, not a ski station. The gondola is a 5-15 min walk from most hotels. Don't overpay for marginal proximity. Stay in the atmospheric center and enjoy the 10-min walk or free shuttle.

3
Beware

Restaurants are the highlight — budget for them

Courmayeur has exceptional restaurants (several Michelin-recognized). Don't book half-board — you'll want to explore the dining scene. Budget €40-60/person for good dinners. It's expensive but the quality justifies it.

4
30-35% cheaper

Stay in Dolonne for value

Dolonne hamlet (1km away) has 30-35% cheaper apartments than Courmayeur center. Free shuttle runs regularly. You lose the sophisticated town atmosphere but save serious money. Good option for groups focused on skiing nearby resorts (La Thuile, Pila).
