Where to Base Yourself

Alta Badia has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

Booking Alta Badia for 'good value Dolomites skiing'. This is the *luxury* corner of the Dolomites — Michelin-starred restaurants, designer hotels, wealthy Italians. If you want value, stay in Val Gardena or Val di Fassa. Alta Badia is for people who want to combine excellent skiing with gourmet food and upscale accommodation. The skiing is the same (same Sella Ronda circuit), but you'll pay 40% more for accommodation and restaurants. Know what you're signing up for.

Our Top Picks

We've stayed in or inspected every property on this list. These are the ones worth your money — and the ones to avoid.

Hotel Rosa Alpina Best in Region

Hotel Rosa Alpina

5★ Hotel · San Cassiano · 80m to Piz Sorega gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

One of the finest ski hotels in the Dolomites. Three Michelin stars across two restaurants (yes, really), a spa that's more like a cathedral, and service that remembers your name after one night. The design is flawless — modern Alpine luxury without being tacky. You're 1 minute from Piz Sorega gondola. The problems: at €550+ per night, rooms aren't huge (28m² for a Classic). And the vibe is *very* polished — if you want a relaxed ski holiday rather than a luxury experience, it can feel too formal. But damn, it's good.

Hotel La Perla Our Pick

Hotel La Perla

4★ Hotel · Corvara · 120m to Col Alto gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The smart choice in Corvara. Ski-in (you can ski right to the door), excellent spa, and half-board food is a cut above typical hotel fare. The building is modern and well-designed. Downsides: not quite ski-out (you walk 2 mins to the Col Alto gondola in the morning), and the hotel gets dominated by German tour groups in peak weeks — breakfast can feel like a buffet stampede. Rooms in the north wing get no sun. But overall, it's the best balance of quality, location, and price in Alta Badia.

Hotel Miramonti Best Value

Hotel Miramonti

3★ Hotel · La Villa · 180m to Piz La Ila gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Family-run hotel in La Villa, the quietest of the Alta Badia villages. Half-board included, small but decent spa, and you're 3 mins' walk from Piz La Ila gondola. The hotel is dated (brown pine everywhere, old-fashioned furniture) but clean and well-maintained. The family (Insam) have run it for 40 years and are genuinely warm. The catch: La Villa is the least convenient base for the Sella Ronda — you're on a branch line. And WiFi is painfully slow. But it's peaceful and good value.

Garni Plan de Gralba Budget Pick

Garni Plan de Gralba

B&B · Corvara · 300m to Col Alto gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Simple B&B on the edge of Corvara. Breakfast included (good spread — pastries, yogurt, meats, cheese), rooms are small but clean, 5-minute walk to Col Alto. It's run by a retired couple (Toni and Francesca) who are sweet but speak limited English. No spa, no elevator, no frills. The building looks like a suburban house from the outside. But at these prices in Alta Badia, you're doing well. And you can walk to Corvara's restaurants/bars in 3 minutes.

Booking Tips

1
Saves 30% cheaper in Val Gardena

Alta Badia is expensive — this is Dolomites luxury territory

Michelin-starred mountain restaurants, designer hotels, wealthy Italian clientele. Budget options barely exist. If cost is a concern, stay in Val Gardena (Selva) and ski over for the day.

2
Better ski access

Corvara is the best base for skiing

San Cassiano is prettier and has Rosa Alpina, but Corvara is the hub of Alta Badia with the most lift connections. La Villa is quieter but less convenient. Colfosco is tiny. Pick Corvara.

3
Beware

Book 7+ nights for discounts

Many Alta Badia hotels offer 'ski weeks' with discounted rates, free ski pass, or spa credit for 7+ night stays. Weekend breaks are poor value here.

4
It's expensive but worth budgeting for

The Michelin-starred mountain restaurants are worth it

Alta Badia has more Michelin stars on the mountain than anywhere else. St. Hubertus (at Rosa Alpina), La Siriola, etc. are genuinely exceptional. Budget €100pp for lunch but do it once — it's a unique experience.
