Where to Base Yourself

Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

Coming to Sainte-Foy expecting a 'resort experience'. It's a tiny, quiet, off-piste base with minimal infrastructure. If you want restaurants, nightlife, pisted runs, and amenities, you're in the wrong place. Ste Foy is for people who want untracked powder, peace, and are happy hiring a guide to access the good terrain. It's not a family holiday resort or a beginner-friendly destination. If you're not into touring and off-piste, stay in Les Arcs and save your money.

La Ferme de Moudon Our Pick

La Ferme de Moudon

Catered Chalet · Sainte-Foy Village · 900m to Ste Foy gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

A converted farmhouse run by a British couple (James and Sarah) who genuinely care. Food is excellent (proper home cooking, not chalet slop), hot tub overlooking the mountains, and the vibe is relaxed. The catch: you're a 12-minute walk from the gondola, uphill on the way back after skiing. They offer a minibus but it only runs twice in the morning. And you're sharing with 12 other guests — if you get a dud group, the week can feel long. But for off-piste enthusiasts who want knowledgeable hosts, this is gold.

Hôtel Le Monal Best Value

Hôtel Le Monal

2★ Hotel · Sainte-Foy Station · 120m to Ste Foy gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Basic ski hotel, 2 mins from the gondola. Clean, cheap, functional. The hotel is dated (think 1985), rooms are small, and the breakfast buffet is minimal. But the bar downstairs is the social hub for the mountain — you'll meet guides, locals, and get the inside track on conditions. Owner Claude is a character (can be grumpy before 10am). No spa, no frills, but if you're here to ski the steeps and don't need pampering, it works.

Chalet Yellowstone Premium Choice

Chalet Yellowstone

Catered Chalet · Sainte-Foy Village · 800m to Ste Foy gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Boutique luxury chalet for 8-10 guests. Beautiful design, outdoor hot tub, food is genuinely excellent (chef-trained host). The problem: at this price in Sainte-Foy, you're paying for exclusivity in a tiny resort with limited terrain. If conditions are poor (Ste Foy only has 2 main lifts), you'll feel trapped. And it's a 10-min walk to gondola. For that money, you could be in a nicer chalet in a bigger resort. But if you value peace over piste-km, it's lovely.

Résidence de la Tarentaise Budget Pick

Résidence de la Tarentaise

Apartment · Sainte-Foy Village · 700m to Ste Foy gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Basic self-catering apartments in the old village. Kitchens are well-equipped, apartments are spacious, and you're in a real Alpine village (not a resort). The downsides: it's a 10-minute walk to the gondola, there's only one small shop in the village (limited stock), and décor is very dated. WiFi is patchy. But if you want budget peace in a traditional setting and don't mind self-catering, it's a good base.

Booking Tips

1
Saves Manage expectations on amenities

Sainte-Foy is tiny — don't expect resort infrastructure

There are 2 main lifts, minimal piste-bashing, and only a handful of places to eat. This is a base for off-piste and touring, not a resort holiday. If you need variety, stay in Les Arcs (20 mins away) and drive to Ste Foy for powder days.

2
Factor in guide costs

You need a guide for the good terrain

Ste Foy's appeal is the off-piste. On-piste, it's tiny and limited. Budget €350-400/day for a guide. If you're not hiring a guide, don't come here — you're wasting the resort's potential and you'll be bored.

3
Beware

Book catered chalets, not apartments

There's only one small shop in the village with poor selection. Self-catering means driving to Bourg-St-Maurice (20 mins) for groceries. Catered chalets make more sense here.

4
Avoid disappointment

Ste Foy is weather-dependent

With only 2 main lifts, if there's wind or poor visibility, your options are very limited. Have a backup plan (Les Arcs is 20 mins away). Don't book here for a once-a-year trip unless you're flexible.
