Where to Base Yourself

Courchevel has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers to Courchevel almost always book Moriond (1650) to 'save money while skiing the Three Valleys'. Here's the truth: you're paying huge money to reach the Three Valleys either way. The difference between 1650 and 1850 is £60–80 per night. Over a week, that's £420–560 for a completely different experience. If you can't afford 1850, pick a different resort entirely. Don't half-ass Courchevel by staying in a soulless concrete village. Commit or go elsewhere.

Our Top Picks

We've stayed in or inspected every property on this list. These are the ones worth your money — and the ones to avoid.

Hôtel Les Peupliers Our Pick

Hôtel Les Peupliers

4★ Hotel · Courchevel 1850 · 80m to Bellecôte gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The best 4-star value in 1850 (which is saying something in Courchevel). True ski-in/ski-out, excellent spa, and you're not paying palace prices. The Grangeat family has run it for 40 years and it shows — service is warm, not stuffy. Rooms are traditional Savoyard, which some find cosy and others find dated. The in-house restaurant is very good but pricey at €80 for 3 courses.

Hôtel Annapurna Best Value

Hôtel Annapurna

3★ Hotel · Courchevel 1850 · 180m to Jardin Alpin
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The only 3-star that makes sense in 1850 — everything else is either palatial or terrible. Five minutes' walk to Jardin Alpin, friendly staff, and breakfast included (rare in Courchevel). Rooms are small and functional, the spa is just a sauna, and you'll feel the price difference versus 4-star neighbours. But for 1850 at this price, it's a minor miracle.

Les Airelles Splurge

Les Airelles

5★ Palace · Courchevel 1850 · 0m to Jardin Alpin
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The most famous palace in the Alps. Ski-in/ski-out directly on Jardin Alpin, baroque décor that's either 'magnificent' or 'trying way too hard' (depending on your taste), and service that's impeccable but formal. Three restaurants, incredible spa, and you'll share the breakfast room with oligarchs and minor royalty. Worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but the formality and stuffiness won't suit everyone. Dress code enforced.

Résidence Grand Lodge Budget Pick

Résidence Grand Lodge

Apartment · Courchevel 1650 · 50m to Ariondaz gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The smart money for families or groups. Stay in Moriond (1650), ski the same Three Valleys, save 40% versus 1850. True ski-in/ski-out, proper kitchens, and the free shuttle to 1850 runs every 10 minutes if you want nightlife. The trade-off: Moriond has zero charm (it's 1960s concrete), limited restaurants, and you'll feel like the budget option. But the skiing is identical.

Booking Tips

1
Saves 40% cheaper in 1650

1850 vs 1650 (Moriond): the brutal truth

1850 is 40% more expensive, has better restaurants and nightlife, and is where the money is. 1650 is cheaper, soulless, and you'll feel like you're missing out. If budget matters, stay in 1650. If you can stretch to 1850, do it. The middle ground doesn't work.

2
€600pp for large groups

Chalets beat hotels for groups of 10+

Courchevel has 300+ catered chalets. For groups, per-head cost is often lower than hotels, you get privacy, and a dedicated chef. We calculated: €12,000 chalet split 10 ways = €1,200pp including all food vs €1,800pp in hotels.

3
Beware

Skip half-board in 1850

Courchevel 1850 has 60+ restaurants including 12 Michelin stars. Hotel half-board is poor value — you're locked into mediocre food. Eat out or self-cater. Half-board adds €65pp/day for worse food than you'll get in town.

4
30% cheaper

Late March = best value skiing

Last two weeks of March have 30% lower prices than February, excellent snow coverage (Courchevel goes to 2,738m), and sunny spring conditions. Book March 15–31 for the sweet spot.
