Where to Base Yourself

Levi has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers book Levi because they want to see the northern lights and experience the Arctic while skiing. They book a glass igloo for the full week because it looks amazing on Instagram. Mistake: those glass igloos cost £350-500/night and you're 8km from the slopes. They end up spending £2500+ on accommodation alone for an experience that's great for 2-3 nights maximum. Plus the skiing is very limited — you'll ski out the terrain in 2-3 days. They should've split their trip: 2-3 nights in a glass igloo for the northern lights experience (budget £700-900), then 3-4 nights in a regular Levi apartment for skiing (budget £250-350). Or skip the glass igloos entirely and book a good hotel with spa, saving £1500 while still accessing northern lights tours. The mistake is confusing a special-occasion splurge with week-long accommodation needs. Glass igloos are incredible for a couple nights; they're financially insane and impractical for a full ski week.

Break Sokos Hotel Levi

4★ Spa Hotel · Levi Center · 100m to Levi Summit gondola

The best full-service hotel in Levi, combining ski hotel with Finnish spa culture. Large spa with multiple saunas (this is Finland — saunas are serious), pool, decent restaurant. Northern Lights Village

{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Unique glass igloo accommodation 8km from Levi center. Sleep under the stars (and northern lights in winter) in heated glass igloos. Restaurant, activities, shuttle to Levi included. This isn't really about skiing — it's about the Arctic experience. You're paying premium prices for the novelty and northern lights viewing. Only book if the experience matters as much as skiing.

Hotel Levi Panorama Best Value

Hotel Levi Panorama

3★ Hotel · Levi Center · 150m to Front slopes
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Solid 3-star hotel offering good value in expensive Levi. Simple but comfortable rooms, small spa with sauna (essential in Finland), breakfast included. You're at the base of the slopes, 3-min walk from the gondola. Nothing fancy but reliable quality at mid-range prices. Best for skiers who want comfort and slope access without paying 4-star rates.

Levi Summit Apartments Budget Pick

Levi Summit Apartments

Apartment · Levi Center · 200m to Summit gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Budget apartments near the base area. Simple, functional, ski-in/ski-out. These are basic self-catering units — small, dated, but clean and adequately equipped. Sauna in the building (because Finland). Best for budget groups who'll spend their time skiing and can self-cater to manage Finnish food costs. You're trading comfort for value and location.

Booking Tips

1
Saves Realistic expectations

Levi is about the Arctic experience

The skiing is limited (43 slopes, 230m vertical) and not the main draw. You're here for the Arctic: northern lights, reindeer sleigh rides, ice hotels, sauna culture. Budget time and money for these activities, not just skiing. It's a complete winter experience, not just a ski trip.

2
Season selection matters

Polar night (Nov-Jan) vs endless light (Mar-Apr)

November-January has dark days (polar night) but best northern lights. March-April has long daylight but rarely see northern lights. December-January is coldest (-15 to -30°C). Choose based on what you value: northern lights in darkness vs sunshine skiing in spring.

3
Beware

Finnish prices are high but manageable

Finland is expensive but not Norway-level. Restaurant dinners £35-50, beer £7-9, groceries 30% above UK. Self-catering saves money. Budget £300-400/person per week for food/drink when apartment-based.

4
Cultural requirement

Sauna is non-negotiable

Every accommodation has sauna — it's Finnish law (not really, but effectively). Use it. After cold Arctic days, sauna is essential not luxury. Book places with good sauna facilities; this matters more in Levi than anywhere else.
