Where to Base Yourself

Mayrhofen has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

First-timers book Mayrhofen because it's a lively Austrian ski town with great nightlife and access to the Hintertux glacier. They book a 3-star hotel in town, excited for the authentic Tyrolean experience. Then they realize: Austrian hotels expect you to take half-board, which they didn't budget for. They booked room-only, now they're paying €25+ per meal in resort restaurants. The half-board surcharge looked expensive when booking (€35/day) but would've saved them €50/day on dining costs. Plus they're missing out on the excellent Austrian hotel food — proper Tyrolean dinners with local ingredients. The mistake: not understanding Austrian ski culture. Half-board isn't an optional extra; it's the foundation of the experience. Book it from the start, factor it into your budget, and enjoy the best value dining you'll find in ski resorts.

Our Top Picks

Elisabeth Hotel Our Pick

Elisabeth Hotel

5★ Superior Hotel · Town Center · 300m to Penkenbahn gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The best hotel in Mayrhofen, combining traditional Tyrolean charm with contemporary luxury. Stunning 3000m² spa, gourmet restaurant, beautifully designed rooms. Half-board is exceptional — 5-course dinners that justify the premium price. You're in the town center, 5-min walk to the Penkenbahn. This is the Austrian ski hotel experience done to perfection. Expensive but faultless.

4★ Superior Hotel · Near Penkenbahn · 180m to Penkenbahn gondola
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Excellent 4-star superior hotel closer to the Penkenbahn than town center. Large spa with pool, good restaurant, comfortable rooms. Half-board is reliably good — proper Tyrolean cooking. Slightly less polished than Elisabeth but 30% cheaper and better located for skiing. Perfect for skiers who want comfort and convenience without 5-star pricing.

Hotel Neuhaus Great Value

Hotel Neuhaus

3★ Superior Hotel · Town Center · 250m to Penkenbahn
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

Family-run 3-star superior in the town center. Rooms are traditional but well-maintained, small spa with sauna, half-board is hearty and generous. Nothing fancy but solidly Austrian — this is the hospitality style that made Austrian ski holidays famous. You're in the center of town, 5-min walk to both gondolas. Best value for traditional Austrian experience.

Booking Tips

1
Saves €70/week saved

Half-board is standard — embrace it

Austrian ski hotels assume you'll take half-board (breakfast + dinner). It's usually excellent value and better quality than resort restaurants. We calculated: half-board adds €30-40/day but saves €50/day on dining out. Take it.

2
Choose right base

Mayrhofen town vs Hintertux glacier

Mayrhofen town is charming but skiing is good not great (630m vertical). Hintertux glacier (45 min away) has year-round skiing and 1500m vertical. If you're mainly skiing Hintertux, stay there. If you want nightlife and atmosphere, stay Mayrhofen and day-trip to glacier.

3
Beware

No ski-in/ski-out in town

Mayrhofen is a real town, not a ski station. All accommodation requires 5-15 min walk or bus to gondolas. Don't pay premium prices for marginal proximity. Stay in town center for atmosphere, near gondola for convenience — both need walking.

4
30-40% cheaper

Book guesthouses for value

Family-run guesthouses (Gasthof/Pension) offer 30-40% better value than hotels of equivalent comfort. You lose spa facilities but gain authentic hospitality and excellent half-board. Perfect for budget-conscious skiers.
